چکیده

Over the past few decades, antibiotic resistant bacteria have become increasingly common in clinical settings and are now a major global public health concern. Wildlife may aid in the dissemination of antibiotic resistant (AR) bacteria and AR genes. Herring Gulls may be particularly important reservoirs of AR bacteria because they forage and roost at humanmodified settings where they may obtain AR bacteria. Although AR bacteria have been found in gulls, there is very little understanding of the ecological and demographic factors influencing carriage and transmission of AR by gulls. In this study, we tested for potential effects of nesting density and gender on the prevalence of Gram negative bacteria resistant to tetracycline and ceftazidime in Herring Gulls. We found that the prevalence of Gram-negative bacteria resistant to ceftazidime increased significantly in gulls nesting at high density sites at the end of the breeding season; there was no change at low density sites. There was no effect of nest density on prevalence of Gram-negative bacteria resistant to tetracycline. We found no significant effects of gender on the proportion of Gram-negative AR bacteria. We identified a subset of isolates from gull feces at the genus and/or species level including several E.coli strains and Proteus species. Our results suggest that males and females nesting at low and high densities play an equal role in dissemination of AR. However, the lack of observed differences may result from a small sample size relative to the high variability among samples. In conclusion, our study indicates that there is a relationship between high nesting densities and antibiotic resistance prevalence so that gulls at high density sites play a more important role in AR prevalence than gulls at low density sites.

Antimicrobial resistant bacteria in wild mammals and birds: a coincidence or cause for concern?

BACKGROUND The emergence and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing concern to public and animal health. The contribution attributable to wildlife remains unclear. In this study two unrelated wildlife species herring gulls (Larus argentatus) and a hybrid deer (Cervus elaphus x Cervus nippon) were investigated for the presence of Escherichia coli expressing an AMR phenotype...

Increased prevalence of antibiotic-resistant E. coli in gulls sampled in Southcentral Alaska is associated with urban environments

BACKGROUND Antibiotic-resistant bacteria pose challenges to healthcare delivery systems globally; however, limited information is available regarding the prevalence and spread of such bacteria in the environment. The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in large-bodied gulls (Larus spp.) at urban and remote locations in Southcentral Alaska to gain inf...

Drug resistance determinants in Herring Gulls (Larus argentatus) and human wastewater in Cape Cod

Antibiotic resistant bacteria pose a serious risk in human and veterinary medicine. In 2001, the World Health Organization identified drug resistance as a major threat to global health. Antimicrobial agents are powerful tools used by clinicians to treat bacterial infections, however, these drugs are losing their potency as microbial communities evolve methods to evade or destroy the antibiotics...

A transactional analysis of changes in parent and chick behaviour prior to separation of Herring Gulls (Larus Argentatus): A three-term contingency model.

The effect of the passage of time on parent-offspring behaviour of urban Herring Gulls (Larus Argentatus) was studied and analysed using a three-term contingency model. A behavioural sequence was initiated by the arrival of a parental adult gull, which would lead to feeding in the chick. However, with the passage of time, and approach of the separation period, this pattern changed. Chicks' begg...

Effects of winter fishery activities on resting numbers , food and body condition of large gulls Larus argentatus and L . marinus in the south - eastern North Sea

C Influences of fishery activities on herring gulls and great black-backed gulls (Larus argentatus, L. mannus) wintering on the island of Helgoland, south-eastern North Sea, were studied When cod flshery discards were available close to the island. 83 to 87 % of the gulls' pellets contained fishery discard remains and 70 to 73 % of all pellets consisted exclusively of these. At times when no ne...
